Family:  Serranidae (Sea basses: groupers and fairy basslets)
Max. size:  43 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 1,300.0 g
Environment:  reef-associated; brackish; marine; depth range - 50 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: northern coast of South America.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 10-10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-14; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 7-7. Body brown, yellowish brown ventrally; 7 vertical dark brown bars on ventral part of body; a large dark brown blotch edged with a pale yellowish brown line on pectoral base; pectoral, pelvic and anal fins dark brown (Ref. 13608).
Biology:  Found on semi-hard or soft bottoms. Juveniles are often in association with Thalassia. Synchronously hermaphroditic (Ref. 7251).
