Family:  Symphysanodontidae (Slopefishes)
Max. size:  29.6 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 202.2 g
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 101 - 476 m
Distribution:  Western Central Atlantic: from off North Carolina and Bermuda to northern South America (inluding West Indies, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea); off Ascension Island; South Atlantic, from localities well north of St. Helena Island and west of the Island of Pegalu.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits rocky bottoms.

Country info:  Type locality, St. Helena, ZISP 42033 (holotype of Planctanthias longifilis) which is probably a junior synonym of S. berryi based on the original description and illustration by Trunov (1976) and examination of 4 IIPB specimens and distribution of the species (Ref. 54833).
