Family:  Synaphobranchidae (Cutthroat eels), subfamily: Synaphobranchinae
Max. size:  160 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; marine; depth range 290 - 2400 m
Distribution:  Circumglobal, except the northeast Pacific (Ref. 26895). Eastern Atlantic: Liberia to northern Angola (Ref. 5235).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 230. Dark grey in color (Ref. 3973). Anal rays about 230 (Ref. 3973).
Biology:  Found on the upper continental slope (Ref. 50610, 75154), over rocky substrata (Ref. 58302).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 04 February 2009 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  First record in the Chathams Island (Ref. 45493). Recorded as scarce in the Northeastern and Eastern Chatham Rise (Ref. 87166). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 3973, 33390, 75154.
