Max. size:  50 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 10 - 90 m
Distribution:  Southwest Pacific: Australia (including Lord Howe Island) and New Zealand (including Kermadec Islands).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 52-72; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 42-56
Biology:  A benthic species which occurs in the continental shelf and in inshore waters (Ref. 7300, 75154). Often found in caves (Ref.9002).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 11 April 2022 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Type locality, Queen Charlotte Sound, NMNZ P9640 (neotype of Gadum rhacinum) (Ref. 75154). Known from mainland New Zealand, the Kermadec Is. (Ref. 8879) and Chatham Islands (Ref. 45524). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ. Also Ref. 45493, 75154.
