Zacapu shiner
Carpita de Zacapu,  Zacapu shiner,  Zacapu shiner

Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Pogonichthyinae
Max. size:  4.557 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Central America: known only from the Zacapu Lake and its outlet in Michoacan, Mexico.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 2-2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7-9; Anal spines: 1-2; Anal soft rays: 6-7. Can be distinguished by the following combination of characters: anal fin with 6 branched rays, rarely 7; scales in a lateral series 42, rarely 40-41, or 43-45; 10-11 gill rakers in the first arch; a dark lateral stripe widens from approximately the pectoral fin origin to the dorsal fin origin, forming a slightly convex segment (Ref. 84762).
Biology:  Inhabits Lake Zacapu which is fed by at least 12 large springs. The spring water is clean and supports dense vegetation. The rest of the lake has turbid water with less vegetation than the spring area (Ref. 84762).
IUCN Red List Status: Endangered (EN); Date assessed: 05 March 2018 (B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v)) Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Found only in the Zacapu Lake and its outlet in Michoacan. The introduction of the exotic carp species Cyprinus carpioand Ctenopharyngodon idella and their parasite Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934 seems to pose a negative impact on this species. Water mass in the lake has decreased due to reduction of water inflow to the springs that feeds the lake and drying of the original marshy area for agricultural purposes. This water mass reduction had detrimental impacts on the Zacapu Lake population of Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis (Bean, 1897), severely comprising genetic diversity and increasing the extinction risk of its fish populations. This fish species should be considered in danger of extinction under the Mexican environmental law and based on the criteria of Risk Evaluation Method (Método de Evalucaión de Riesgo-MER). Also it is proposed that this should be classified as critically endangered based on IUCN criteria (Ref. 84762).
