Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Leuciscinae
Max. size:  40 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 1,000.0 g
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Asia: Southern Anatolia, Turkey and Near East. Found in Lake Beysehir and river basins of Göksu, Seyhan, Ceyhan, Kueik, Orontes (Mediterranean Sea) and Tigris-Euphrates (Persian Gulf).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-12; Anal soft rays: 13-14; Vertebrae: 46-49. Description: Dorsal fin with 8-11 branched rays; anal fin with 9-12 branched rays (Ref. 109283).
Biology:  Inhabits rivers and lakes including reservoirs in Iraq. Prefers stone grounds and still waters in river and lakes in Turkey. Feeds on insect larvae, and eggs and fry of fishes as well as diatoms and algae (Ref. 109283).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 18 March 2013 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Occurs in large rivers such as Tigris, Little and Great Zabs and Diyala. Also found in small rivers, streams and lakes such as Habbaniyah, Tharthar and Razzazaah as well as reservoirs such as the Dukan and Derbendikhan (Ref. 109283).
