Family:  Polynemidae (Threadfins)
Max. size:  30 cm NG (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine; depth range - 25 m, amphidromous
Distribution:  Eastern Indian Ocean and Western Pacific: west coast of India to Thailand. Probably occurs in Malaysia (Ref. 5756) and Laos (Ref. 9497).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-15; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 11-13
Biology:  Lives over sandy bottoms, regularly entering freshwaters during breeding season. Feeds mainly on crustaceans (especially shrimps), small fishes and benthic organisms. Marketed fresh (Ref. 3479).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Collected from Mumbai, Maharashtra; West Bengal in Ganges River, Gariahat, Namkhana, and Hooghly River; and Pondicherry (Ref. 31582). One of the most important fisheries species especially West Bengal (Ref. 57343). Also Ref. 3479, 4833, 45255.
