Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Congo River basin in Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola (Ref. 83752). Reports from the Chad basin (Ref. 3047, 83360) or Benue (Pappenheim 1907) are unconfirmed and questionable (Ref. 3203, 83752), possibly referring to C. tamandua.

Country info:  Known from the lower Congo (Ref. 83752), Pool Malebo (Ref. 44985), middle Congo River main course (Ref. 83752), Kasai (Ref. 11970, 83752), Sankuru (Ref. 46253), Lake Tumba, Ubangui, Uélé, Mongala, Ruki, Aruwimi, Lindi, Wagenia Falls, Lualaba and upper Lualaba (Lake Upemba) (Ref. 83752). Type-locality of the syntypes of Gnathonemus elephas: 'Upoto' (Ref. 42476).
