Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Smiliogastrinae
Max. size:  25 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Asia: Amban River, Sri Lanka.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits unshaded, rocky, mid-hill streams (Ref. 11966). Larger individuals form small groups of 5-10 fish, inhabiting relatively deep (1-5 m) rock pools at the bottom of cascades, usually sheltering behind boulders in very swift flow. Juveniles occur mainly in the shallow (< 1 m) areas of larger streams with sand or gravel substrates. Sympatric with Labeo fisheri over its known range.

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Known only from the Amban River basin, where it has a relatively broad but higly discontinuous range. Population is relatively small and therefore is vulnerable and should be monitored regularly. Threats would include agrochemicals, pressure from food fishery and siltation (Ref. 11966).
