Family:  Apogonidae (Cardinalfishes), subfamily: Apogoninae
Max. size:  11 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; marine; depth range 2 - 160 m
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Indonesia, New Guinea and northwestern Australia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 8-8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 9-9. Description: Characterized by brown to silvery color; presence of dark brown bar below first dorsal fin; dorsal, anal, caudal and pelvic fins blackish; greatest depth of body 2.5-2.8 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Nocturnal species which occurs over soft bottom (Ref. 75154).

Country info:  Type locality, Darwin, Northern Territory, WAM P.14397 (holotype of Apogon melanopus) (Ref. 75154). Museum: CSIRO CA1572. From North West Cape to Darwin (Ref. 5978). Also Ref. 3131. Known from York Sound, Western Australia to Wessel Islands, Northern Territory (Ref. 90102).
