Family:  Apogonidae (Cardinalfishes), subfamily: Apogoninae
Max. size:  6 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 18 - 86 m
Distribution:  Western Central Pacific: northern Australia, from the Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia to the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. Recently reported from Indonesia (Ref. 47567).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 8-8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Description: Characterized by pale brown to silvery color; sides of body covered with large brown spots; spoke-like brown bands radiating from rear half of eye; greatest depth of body 2.9-3.5 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Found on the continental shelf (Ref. 75154). Also seen in sand/rubble bottoms among rocks, gorgonians and sponges (Ref 90102).

Country info:  Type locality, NE of Charles Point, Darwin, Northern Territory, NTM S.13284-014 (holotype of Apogon fuscomaculatus) (Ref. 75154). Known from Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Queensland (Exmouth Gulf, W. Australia to Gulf of Carpentaria, Qld.) (Ref. 7300). Also Ref. 90102.
