Max. size:  100 cm SL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 31 kg; max. reported age: 9 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater, potamodromous
Distribution:  South America: Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay River basins; Laguna dos Patos drainage, upper Chaparé and Mamoré River basin in Bolivia. Occurrence in the remaining Amazon River highly doubtful.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in ponds (Ref. 11229). Carnivorous (Ref. 79585). Feeds on fish and crustaceans (Ref. 13614).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Known from San Pedro in the Lower Paraná River (Ref. 11229), streams of Urugua-I and Iguazú river (Ref. 56308) and Alrededores de Santa Fe (Ref. 51923). Also Ref. 9086.
