Family:  Acanthuridae (Surgeonfishes, tangs, unicornfishes), subfamily: Nasinae
Max. size:  60 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 43 - 220 m
Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: antitropical, from Japan and Lord Howe Island to the Hawaiian Islands.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 6-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 26-28; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 26-28. Body elongate, higher and more bluish than N. lopezi. Forehead without rostral prominence even in adults. Two small peduncular plates each with a sharp, approximately semicircular, laterally projecting keel. caudal fin emarginate without a filament. Reaches 46 cm SL.
Biology:  Found in deep seaward reefs (Ref. 9710). Benthopelagic and mesopelagic (Ref. 58302).
