Max. size:  21 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 772 - 3400 m
Distribution:  North Pacific: Bering Sea to the region east of Hokkaido, Japan in the western Pacific; Gulf of Alaska to off Bahia Magdalena, Baja California.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-16; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 17-19; Vertebrae: 36-38. 12-15 AO photophores; 8-9 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 37-40 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fins with rather robust, stout rays (Ref. 36121). Rich brown to black, darkest dorsally and lighter below; dusky on fins, inner rays of pelvic fins whitish (Ref. 6885).
Biology:  Epipelagic to mesopelagic (Ref. 31442); minimum depth of occurrence is 500 m upon reaching about 5 cm length (54657). Feed on euphausiids (Ref. 6885). Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and larvae (Ref. 31442).
