Family:  Muraenidae (Moray eels), subfamily: Muraeninae
Max. size:  180 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 3 - 30 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: Mauritius and the Comoros to the west Pacific.
Diagnosis:  Recognized by its generally more white color and smaller and rounder spots (Ref. 48635). Description: Characterized by whitish color with black spots; larger and widely spaced spots in young fish; smaller and more numerous spots with increased growth; body depth at gill opening 14-18 in TL. Origin of dorsal fin anterior to gill opening; anus near middle of body; single row of jaw teeth; enlarged canines in medial row in intermaxillary (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Solitary among coral outcrops, often seen protruding head from shelter. Found in coastal reefs and outer slopes in 3-30 m (Ref 90102).
