Family:  Evermannellidae (Sabertooth fishes)
Max. size:  16.85 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 100 - 1000 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Portugal and Azores to Congo, and from Namibia to South Africa including the Mediterranean. Western Indian Ocean: off Natal, South Africa (Ref. 4058). Northwest Atlantic: Canada (Ref. 5951). Southwest Pacific: New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068). Presumed circumglobal in the southern transition region. Southwestern Atlantic: Brazil (Ref. 47377)and Argentine (Ref. 44852).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-13; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 33-37. Color in alcohol varies from light to dark brown; with numerous melanophores on body and head (Ref. 4058).
Biology:  Oceanic and mesopelagic, most adults found between 400-1,000 m (Ref. 4478). Feeds on midwater fishes (Ref. 4763).
