Family:  Cetomimidae (Flabby whalefishes)
Max. size:  5.3 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 200 m
Distribution:  Circumglobal: In tropical to subtropical waters; except eastern Central Pacific. Eastern Atlantic: four records between 25°N and 5°S. Western Indian Ocean: Mozambique Channel (Ref. 6619).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-20; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 15-18. Purple in color but preserved specimens turn brownish (Ref. 6619). Branchiostegal rays: 3-5+4 (Ref. 36689).
Biology:  Adults probably bathypelagic, young from 10-200 m (Ref. 6533). Feed on copepods (Ref. 6714). Observed hovering vertically (Ref. 6619). Oviparous, with planktonic larvae (Ref. 36689).
