Family:  Gonostomatidae (Bristlemouths)
Max. size:  25 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 900 - 2000 m
Distribution:  Southwest Pacific: New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068). South Atlantic.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-13; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 47-53. Head grey to black-brown in color; sides of body pale yellow with darker dotted pigmentation; fins colorless except caudal with melanophores and dorsal with light pigmentation (Ref. 3991).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 7300, 75154). Postlarvae and juveniles occur near the surface at night. In southern Atlantic and southeastern Pacific, adults are usually found at depths between 100-2,000 m (Ref. 3991). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
