Family:  Ipnopidae (Deep-sea tripod fishes), subfamily: Ipnopinae
Max. size:  38 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 0 - 1920 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: off west Africa at 9°N. Western Atlantic: off Virginia, USA to off Guyana, including Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Indian Ocean: Mozambique Channel.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-13; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 12-14. Body grey to brown in color; head dark (Ref. 5320).
Biology:  Benthic at 692-1420 m (Ref. 58302). Adults bathybenthic on continental slope and rise at temperatures generally warmer than 4°C while larvae are pelagic near the surface. Feeds on mysids and decapods. Synchronously hermaphroditic (Ref. 3590). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.
