More information on Fish tuberculosis (FishMB)
Main Ref: 48502
Disease type: Bacterial diseases
Disease name: Fish tuberculosis (FishMB)
Other names: FishMycobacterium (FishMB)
Caus. agent: Mycobacterium fortuitum
Group:
Part of body and/or behavior affected by disease:
Skins and/or fins  Belly  Swimming behavior
 Gills  Anus  Other behavior
 Eyes  Viscera Afflicted  Other symptoms
Fish affected:
Symptoms: The bacteria commonly occurs in the kidneys, spleen, liver, intestines, stomach and also in the skin in the form of nodules (tubercles) of 1-4mm in diameter. Infected fish becomes lethargic, hide themselves, rest on the bottom , lack of appetite or becomes emaciated, swollen belly, exopthalmos, cloudy eyes, exhibits rapid breathing, discoloration (usually dark), frayed fins, white purulent skin sores or bulges, skin ulcers and deformities.
Treatments: Destruction of sick fish and disinfection. Treatment is only effective in the initial stage of the of the disease (usually at the fish-breeding farm). The use of Erythromycin (2g/100L for 2 days, and can be repeated once a week for three weeks), Rifampicine (in the food: 250-500mg/100g fish food for 2 weeks), and Streptomycin (2 gm/100L for several days and afterwards do 25-40% water change) yields good results. Also Kanamycin (2.0-4.0g/100L; 2 days), Tetracycline (3-4 gm/100 l for 2-3 days, water change after treatment; mixed with food: 0.5 gm/100 gm fish food to be fed during 5 days.), Minocycline (in the food: 100-200 mg/100g fish food for 7-10 days, and to be repated after 1 month), Doxycycline (in the food: 100-200mg/100g fish food.), and Tylosin (2g/100L for 2 days, and sometimes it is necessary to repeat each week, during 3 weeks of treatment) can have an effect.
Prophylaxis:
Remarks: Mycobacterium is a gram-positive bacterium therefore common anti-bacterial drugs has no effect (anti-bacterial drugs is just effective against gram-negative bacteria). Common route of infection is through oral ingestion by eating contaminated food (especially with mosquito larvae), eating other fishes that are infected with FishMB or by eating the faeces of other fish. Also infection can occur through open lesions or external parasites. The problem with this disease is that it is only diagnosed in the advanced stage where treatment is no longer applicable. It can also cause infection to humans upon direct contact with untreated wounds.
