Comments: Type locality of Gymnapogon janus, Visayan Sea between northern Negros & Masbate Islands, southeast of Sicogon I. Also collected from San Januico Strait, North of Nababuy Island (Reef); Off East Coast of Leyte Island, during the 'Albatross' Philippine Expedition, 1907-1910, 13 Apr 1908, using dynamite at 1-3 m depth (Ref. 107874).

Etymology: Gymnapogon: Greek, gymnos = naked + Greek, pogon = beard (Ref. 45335);  janus: Named after Janus, the Roman god of gates and doors, represented by two faces, referring to the rounded caudal fin when scales have been sloughed off for some specimens of Pseudamia but with internal characters and preopercle spine of Gymnapogon..

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 9 - 10; Vertebrae: 24. This species is distinguished by the following characters: A 9-10 with anterior-most ray unbranched; D 10, the two anterior-most rays unbranched; pectoral fins 14, 9 branched and 5 unbranched; caudal fin rounded, principal caudal rays 17. 15 branched; vomer with one row of two villiform teeth on each side (Ref. 107874).
