Uses: live export: yes;
Comments: Recorded from Santa Monica, Iba, San Sebastian and Pugad. Has probably been ithroduced via the ornamental trade, farmed in fishponds and escaped during flooding events (Ref. 108831). Believed to have caused the decline in catch of other important food-fish due to competition for food and space, although not much evidence is available regarding their negative impact (Ref. 108831).

Etymology: Mayaheros: Named for the native Mesoamerican Maya people whose ancestral distribution includes most of the native area of the M. urophthalmus group, very likely the ancestral area of the whole genus. The name is combined with the old cichlid genus name Heros (meaning hero), to be understood as the hero of the Maya people (Ref. 114771).
