Comments: Previously collected from Ibaraki to Miyazaki prefectures on the Pacific coast, Akita to Nagasaki prefectures on the coasts of Sea of Japan and East China Sea, southwest coast of Kyushu, the Izu, Ogasawara, Osumi, and Ryukyu islands (except for Amami Islands), the Nishi-Shichito Ridge, the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, and the East China Sea. New records from Tobi-shima Island, northern Yamagata Prefecture, and Kagoshima Bay and the Amami Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture (Ref. 128621). Also Ref. 11230, 26833, 123579.

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: D X,14-15, rarely X,14; pectoral rays 15, rarely 14; lateral line complete with 33-37 tubed scales; lower edge of preopercl without antrorse serrations; scales with basal cteni; melanophores on caudal peduncle form a saddle that extends ventrally to about 1-2 scale rows beneath lateral line scales (Ref. 123579).

Uncommon deepwater fish. Found over rock or sand bottoms (Refs. 559 and 9137).
