Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9; Vertebrae: 26. Characterized by the following: five diagonal black bands on head and body, first from chin, through the eye, to dorsal part behind eye; posterior part of pelvic fin black; round and transparent first dorsal fin; scales on anterior part of body embedded (Ref. 13361).
Found on slopes of clear and fine sand (usually at about 30 m depth). Lives in symbiotic association with alphaeid shrimps, usually with Alpheus randalli and rarely with A. bellulus. Sometimes found in pairs.
