Africa: found almost anywhere around Lake Tanganyika except in the extreme north, north of Nyanza Lac (Burundi) (Ref. 46829).

Adults occur over sand bottoms near rocks where they feed. Form schools (Ref. 6770). Females brood their young in the mouth (Ref. 86760).
