Remarks 'grenadier', i.e., a spiny tree with red flowers producing the grenade fruit (thick skinned, several celled reddish berry) from Middle French 'pomegrenate' from Latin 'granata', 'granatus', i.e., seedy, from 'granum', i.e., grain (Ref. 27888); 'black', from Old English 'blæc', of obscure origins but probably related to Latin 'flagrare' and Greek 'phlégein', i.e., burn, from Indo-European 'phleg-, bhleg-' (p. 65 in Ref. 11979).
