Remarks 'Lake' from Old French 'lac' from Latin 'lacus' of the same source as Gaelic 'loch' and Latin 'lacuna', i.e., hole, pit, pool (p. 316 in Ref. 11979); 'northern', i.e., of the north alluding to the North American continent; 'chub', i.e., general term for freshwater cyprinids.
