Remarks 'Eglefin' from Middle Dutch 'schelvisch' and Old French 'esclevis' replaced by 'esclefin, aiglefin, èglefin' with the root word 'aigre', from Latin slang 'acrus' from Latin 'acer, acris', i.e., acrid, bitter, pungent, sour (p. 17 in Ref. 9404). Also Ref. 171, 56807, 95632.
