The lack of small white rounded spots could mean S. heteroptera is a junior synonym of S. dumeril; conversely, if spots were originally present and faded due to preservation, S. david could represent a junior synonym of either S. mexicana or S. heteroptera (then, at least one of these Mexican species would be valid). Further studies
are in development to assess the morphological limits and validity of all Northwestern Atlantic species of Squatina. |
