Etymology: Cirrhinus: Latin, cirrus = curl fringe (Ref. 45335);  rubirostris: The species name rubirostris, a Latin adjective, refers to the red color of the rostral tubercules and of the snout generally; it also refers to the Karen name for this species which means "red nosed fish.".

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Vertebrae: 35. Cirrhinus rubirostris differs from all other Cirrhinus in having both sexes with well developed rostral tubercles, and rostral tubercles and snout pinkish or rosy red. Rostral barbels absent, maxillary barbels present.
