Definition of Term

biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
(English) The amount of oxygen consumed by respiratory processes measured in a bottle of water incubated in the dark at constant temperature for a specific time. Standard BOD determinators are for 5-day incubations at 20°C. It should always be stated whether a water sample had been filtered (soluble BOD) or not (total BOD). The biochemical oxygen demand is often wrongly reported as biological oxygen demand.
