| Symptoms: | Death is rapid, with lesions on the gills, and extensive hyperplasia resulting in fused lamellae of the gills. This hyperplasia is sometimes accompanied by a proliferation of the mucus gland and chloride cells. The head back of the host fish exhibits acute lesions with a whitish to yellow color and a reddish zone of hyperaemia around the periphery. This comprise of bacterial cells and necrotic tissue covering haemorrhagic ulcers. | |

| Remarks: | The infection is caused by a wide range of causative agent belonging in the genus Flexibacter (Cytophaga), including Flexibacter columnaris. The disease is connected with careless handling of the host fish. Also ambient conditions such as low temperature, excessive organic load in the water (ammonia and nitrates) can be a factor to induce the infection. | |
