Comments

Occurs in the mainstream of Gandaki, Kosi, Karnali and Mahakali rivers (Ref. 12045) and Pokhara lakes (Ref. 40948), preferring pool/run areas and swift gorges (Ref. 57735). In altitudes of 135-1,650 m. Was the largest valued food fish collected in the Tadi and Sunkosi Rivers. Population decreased after the construction of the Sunkosi dam. Fetched 290-300 Rs/kg fresh and 80-90 Rs/kg smoked at the Kathmandu market in March 1992 (Ref. 9496). Considered vulnerable (Ref. 12044) and in danger of extinction (Ref. 12045, 57735). Preserved in temple ponds and worshipped as a Fish Goddess (Ref. 12045). Colorful fishes throughout life history (Ref. 85009). Also Ref. 4832, 56316, 57344, 57345, 85713.
