Occurs in coastal waters of the North Sea, including the Elbe estuary (Ref. 51031, Ref. 88187).

Threats for greater pipefishes in both the German North and Baltic Sea due to human activities: fisheries, technical installations, construction of cables and pipelines, channel deepening, eutrophication, shipping and boating, aquaculture, coastal construction, sediment removal, chemical pollution (Ref. 88171).
