Ex situ collection: maintained in live gene bank by the Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology, University of South Bohemia at Vodnany (RIFCH USB). Since 1996, the government has supported in situ conservation of rare/endangered breeds. Experimental cryopreserved sperm bank is being extended to meet needs of ex situ conservation (Ref. 32234). Considered critically endangered in 2000 (Ref. 41386), but recently extirpated (Ref. 89840). The wild form of this species occurs in the lower stretches of the rivers Morava (in a stretch about 30 km long) and Dyje (in a stretch about 25 km long). Former range consisted of considerably longer part of the stream of these rivers. Protected under Law 114/1992 and Intimation 395/1992) (Ref. 52149). Also Ref. 54732, 1228, 90060.
