Etymology: Cephaloscyllium: cephalus, from kephale (Gr.), head, referring to its very broad and depressed head; skylion, Greek for dogfish or small shark. (See ETYFish);  formosanum: --anum, Latin adjectival suffix that means, when attached to a name, “belonging to”: Formosa, or Taiwan, referring to type locality off southwestern coast of Taiwan. (See ETYFish).

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

This species is distinguished by the following characters: with four broad dark saddle blotches before first dorsal fin, the first saddle just behind eye, second saddle over gill openings, third saddle above inner margin of pectoral fin and fourth above pelvic fin origin; presence of a narrow dark band between third and fourth saddle blotches; body with numerous small white spots; margins of egg case indented (Ref. 94801).
