Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  sudanensis: Named by Daget (1954) presumably in reference to the middle Niger localities he sampled in the French Sudan; the French term "soudanienne" (Soudan) is anglicized by Beadle (1974) and Lowe-McConnell (1975, 1985) as "soudanian" (Ref. 52346).

Description synthétique Morphologie | Morphométrie

Épines dorsales (Total): 13 - 16; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 13-15; Épines anales 3; Rayons mous anaux: 7 - 8; Vertèbres: 28 - 29. Diagnosis: 13 or fewer (rarely 14) gill-rakers along lower limb of first arch; 37-43 lateral line scales; head length 28.0-34.1% of standard length; predorsal length 36.5-43.2% of standard length; more gradual rise in dorsal spine length from 1st to 6th-7th; pectoral fin relatively short, rarely reaching level of spinous anal fin (Ref. 52346).
