Etymology: Tylochromis: Greek, tylos = callus + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); regani: Named for C. Tate Regan whose pioneering work at the British Museum of National History laid the foundation for many studies of African freshwater fishes (Ref. 52346).

पृष्ठीय रीढ़ (सम्पूर्ण): 14 - 15; पृष्ठीय सौफट रेज़ (सम्पूर्ण): 14-16; गुदा कांटा 3; ऐनल सौफट रेज़: 7 - 9; जानवरों की रीड़ का जोड़: 28 - 29. Diagnosis: 37-40 lateral line scales; terminal canal bearing scales of upper branch do not descend scale rows; 2 series of scales between upper lateral line and anterior part of lower; 15-17 gill-rakers along lower limb of first arch; entire premaxillary oral valve; 28 vertebrae; inferior vertebral apophysis of standard Tylochromis type; lower pharyngeal jaw never extremely robust with mill-like molariform teeth extending over dentigerous surface; 10-15 relatively stout outer row teeth and usually only one inner row on lower jaw (Ref. 52346).

Benthic macrophage (Ref. 52346). Mainly feeds on plants and insect larvae; maternal mouthbrooder that does not pair-bond (Ref. 52307).
