Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible.; rubra: Specific name refers to its red coloration..

Short description
Morfologia | Morfometria
Spine dorsali (totale): 7; Raggi dorsali molli (totale): 8-9; Spine anali 7-9. This species is distinguished by the following characters: rugose genital papillae in both sexes; no IT pores; POP pores present; 5th pelvic fin ray small, unbranched, about 1/10 length of 4th ray (usually poorly ossified and not easy to see); anterior-most branch of 4th pelvic ray elongate, with at least 9 segments; D1 spines not prolonged as filaments. pectoral fin rays 9-16 may be branched; absence of dark ventral-midline spots or mid-peduncular subcutaneous spot towards midbase of caudal fin; (Ref. 38034).
A miniature, deep-water species collected at ledge and spur and groove habitats from 12.2-28.7 m and 9.4-10.4 m depths. This species co=exist with Eviota epiphanes in the spur and groove habitat at 12.2-15.2 m but not shallower. It is one of the smaller Eviota species with females having mature eggs at 1.1 cm SL size (Ref. 38034).
