Etymology: Gymnoxenisthmus: Name from Greek 'gymnos' meaning bare or naked, and the gobioid genus Xenisthmus; refers to the absence of scales on the body.;  tigrellus: Name a Latin word meaning a little tiger; referring to the orange bars on the body (selected by school children at the Australian Museum Science Festival Expo in August 2013)..

This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: no head pores; no scales; D1 V; dorsal- and anal-fin rays branched and at least some pectoral-fin rays are branched; pelvic fin with a spine and five unbranched rays (Ref. 94949).

Collected from a narrow reef flat, the sandy slope with patches of corals and a rocky wall of about 3 m with small caves and shelters, and the slope began at depths of 8-10 m. The holotype was captured on sand at the base of coral at a depth of 8 meters (Ref. 94949).
