Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible.;  oculopiperita: Name from Latin 'oculus' for eye and 'piperita' meaning from the peppermint plant, Mentha piperita; referring to its eye color that resembles a peppermint candy..

Espinas dorsales (total): 7; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 8; Espinas anales 1; Radios blandos anales: 8. This species is distinguished by the following characters: cephalic sensory-pore system categorized as pattern IV or having no PITO and IT pores, and AITO is enlarged; 8/8 dorsal/anal fin-ray formula; all pectoral-fin rays unbranched; fourth pelvic-fin ray with 9 branches; caudal-fin base without black spot, body without linear dark stripes or bright yellow midlateral stripe, and eye color white with radiating reddish bars emanating from pupil (Ref. 94740).
