Etymology: Sicyopterus: Greek, sika, sikya = cucumber + Greek, pteron = wing, fin (Ref. 45335);  stiphodonoides: The name of the species is derived from Stiphodon, a Sicydiinae genus, and from the Greek åéäïæ (oidos), "in the shape of", in reference to its similar Stiphodon female pattern (Ref. 90225).

Upper lip with papillae and without cleft anteriorly and m Upper lip with papillae and without cleft anteriorly and midlaterally. Second dorsal fin with 1 spine and 10 segmented rays. The general pattern of the female resembles that of a female Stiphodon, with a yellowish body background and a light dusky black band extending midlaterally from posterior of pectoral base and ending as a spot posterior to hypural base. Scales in lateral series 55-59, in transverse forward 14-16 and in predorsal 18-20.idlaterally. Second dorsal fin with 1 spine and 10 segmented rays.
