Etymology: Characidium: Diminutive of Charax, -akos = a fish without identification (Ref. 45335);  xanthopterum: Derived from the Greek xanthos (yellow) and pteron (fin), meaning yellow fin, in reference to the bright yellow fins of this species..

شعاع نرم باله پشتي (کل): 10-12; شعاع نرم باله مخرجي: 8 - 9; مهره ها: 32 - 33. Distinguished from other species of genus Characidium by the bright yellow fin coloration, and by the absence of conspicuous dark bars along the sides of body in individuals larger than 3.5 cm SL (vs. dark bars or marks present on the sides of the body in specimens of all sizes in the remaining species of Characidium) (Ref. 76854).
