Etymology: Amblypomacentrus: Greek, amblys = darkness + Greek, poma, -atos = cover + Greek, kentron = sting (Ref. 45335);  kuiteri: Named in honor of Mr. Rudie H. Kuiter, Melbourne, Australia, who collected the holotype and for numerous valuable contributions to our knowledge of tropical reef fishes of the Australian-Indonesian region (Ref. 31106).

Adults inhabit flat or sloping sand bottoms with sparse coral outcrops (Ref. 31106), where they make burrows amongst rubble for nesting (Ref. 48636). Found solitary (usually juveniles) or in pairs (adults), hovering a short distance from the bottom (Ref. 31106). Likely to feed on zooplankton (Ref. 31106). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Minimum depth reported taken from Ref. 48636). Diurnal species (Ref. 113699).
