Asia: known only from South Canara and Madras in India. Recorded from Sri Lanka but identification is still tentative (Ref. 6028).

Occurs in estuaries and backwaters (Ref. 4833). Common along the margins of streams where the flow is slower (Ref. 41236). Predominantly found in fresh water, migrating up to torrential streams (Ref. 41236).
