Etymology: Hemirhamphodon: Greek, hemi = half + Greek, rhamphos = bill + greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335); tengah: Named for the central province of Kalimantan, Kalimantan Tengah from where most of the specimens were collected (Ref. 26761).

Can be distinguished by the following characters: small size (maximum size 35.5 mm SL), few pectoral, usually 8; 13-15 dorsal fin rays; and anterior position of the anal fin origin, usually under dorsal-fin ray 5 or 6 (Ref. 26761).
