Southeast Pacific and Southwest Atlantic: Southwest Pacific: Southeast Pacific: Juan Fernández Is, Nazca Ridge and Sala-y-Gomez, Chile (Ref. 50546). Southwest Atlantic: From Southern Brazil to northern Argentina (Ref. 42513). Previous reports from New South Wales and Victoria (Australia) and New Zealand are misidentifications for Notopogon xenosoma Regan, 1914 (Ref. 42513).

Espinas dorsales (total): 6; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 17; Espinas anales 0; Radios blandos anales: 18. Six oblique purplish-blue bands on each side of body, ground color of body silvery white. Gill cover and subocular region silvery. Upper parts of head and snout dark blue. Fins semitransparent (Ref. 27363).

Occurs on the continental shelf and slope. Identification of Notopogon species are difficult because body shape and development change with age and perhaps sex (Ref. 9563).
