Etymology: Scolopsis: Greek, skolex = worm + Greek, opsis = appearance (Ref. 45335); igcarensis: Name from the acronym of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, where it was first collected.
Junior synonym of Scolopsis vosmeri according to Russell et al., 2019 (Ref. 120656). This record will be deleted in FishBase.

Vertebrae: 22. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: top of head with scales reaching forward to between anterior nostril and snout tip; lower margin of eye tangent to a line from snout tip to upper pectoral fin base; below the eye with an exposed bony ridge; second anal spine is larger and more robust than the 2 other anal spines; a white band running from behind eye to level of end of dorsal fin base (Ref. 92980).
Collected from sand and rubble bottom next to reef (Ref. 92980).
