Etymology: Thysanophrys: Greek, thysanos = tassel + Greek, ophrys = eye brow (Ref. 45335); springeri: Named for Victor G. Springer, who collected the holotype and five paratypes from several places off Massawa, Eritrea.

Western Indian Ocean: mainly Red Sea, but with one specimen from the Gulf of Tadjourna, off Djbouti.
