Eastern Atlantic (including the Mediterranean), Indian and Pacific Oceans. Flat nasal organ devoid of lamellae; lateral line running along base of dorsal fin. There is a midlateral row of scales with pits and/or grooves.

Greek, kallos = beautiful, lovely + Greek, anthias, -as = a fish (Sparus aurata) ( Ref. 45335).
